Thanks, Gary. I was planning on researching about July and Roscoe, to see if I could discover any inspiration for their characters (if there was any). I was simply surprised to discover the similarities while watching a movie I’d never seen before while eating lunch. Like I said, serendipity.
I could tell they had a special friendship after listening to him. It was refreshing to hear him mention Leaving Cheyenne. That’s one of my favorite McMurtry novels and it’s severely underrated.
What a wonderful and delightful association, Derrick! Thanks for revealing that connection!

This post my friends is why God invented the internets. What a treat to read this today.
Ah, shucks. 😊
Interesting connection. Glad to see this pop up on my feed the same day I decided to start Western Star.
My review of Western Star comes out at the end of the month. Here’s a preview: wonderfully insightful.
I’ll be sure to read it. After listening to a couple of podcasts that author David Streitfeld appeared on my excitement to read the book has grown.
David is a good man, and was a good friend with McMurtry.

I agree with you about Leaving Cheyanne.
Leaving Cheyenne, Texasville, and Duane’s Depressed are my 3 favorite lesser known McMurtry books
