Texas is rich in unredeemed dreams, and now that the dust of its herds is settling the writers will be out on their pencils, looking for them in the suburbs and along the mythical Pecos.
I’m just going to leave this comment here because it needs to be said. I’m genuinely saddened to see that such a beautiful article doesn’t have any comments yet.
I have a lot of thoughts on it, which I’ll share tomorrow in a restack, but it’s 1 a.m. here and I have to be up in a few hours. I only opened Substack to reply to a couple of comments, saw your post and the restack of Ted’s essay, clicked the link, and got pulled in immediately.
This is a fantastic essay on Lonesome Dove. It honestly made me excited to read the book. I saved it and I’m going to share it with a friend of mine, also Romanian, who wants to write Westerns one day, because this piece is that good.
It’s lyrical without being pathetic. Erudite without being a tryhard. It offers a lot of information without ever feeling like a lecture. It’s a love letter, but not a corny one. Bravo. And expect more tomorrow. A lot more
