Texans in the 2024 Summer Olympics, Y'all
In the dust of defeat as well as the laurels of victory there is a glory to be found if one has done his best.

Simone Biles is the most famous Olympian from Texas—and the most decorated gymnast. Even hardcore helmet heads know who she is. At the 2016 games in Rio she won four gold medals and a bronze medal. At the 2020 games in Tokyo she won a silver medal and a bronze medal. At the 2024 Paris games she’s favored to increase her hardware count. She’s already won a team gold.*
Before Biles, however, there was Carl Lewis, the sprinter from Houston. He is one of only four Olympians who has won nine gold medals—ten medals in all, making him (thus far) the most decorated Olympian from Texas. At the 1984 Los Angeles games he won four gold medals. At the 1988 Seoul games he won two gold medals and a silver medal. At the 1992 Barcelona games he won two gold medals. At the 1996 Atlanta games he won his last gold medal.
Texas has been sending athletes to the Olympic Games since 1920, when, in Antwerp, shooter Forest McNeir won the gold medal and runner Charles Paddock won two gold medals and two silver medals. This year, seventy-five athletes with Texas ties will compete in the 2024 Paris games. To each and every one I say, “I hope you draw the best bulls. Do your Texas best.”
