Thank you for this. Not many would link the passing of Robert Duvall with the author Larry McMurtry. For those who don’t know, McMurtry was already famous for writing “The Last Picture Show” which made a star out of Jeff Bridges. Later he wrote “Terms of Endearment” and “Brokeback Mountain.” Talk about range and a study of the human condition. An American Original, Larry McMurtry.

Great story. I saw the movie The Last Picture Show in 1971 when I was senior in high school. I didn’t know who Larry McMurtry was, but I will always remember Cybill Shepherd’s pool scene. I believe Lonesome Dove was the first and best McMurtry book that I read. Definitely had an impact on me. Many years later I attended a dinner in Marfa, TX to honor McMurtry. Although I had been warned that he didn’t like to give autographs, I sucked up the courage to interrupt his conversation to have him autograph his book Sacagawea’s Nickname, Essays on the American West. I still have the book with his autograph in my library. PS: Sacagawea’s nickname was Janey.

Thank you, Roger. Yes, who could forget Cybill's pool scene! Great story about meeting Larry. You're correct about him being reluctant to give out autographs. He never just signed a piece of paper, but would sign his books. Thanks for the reminder that Sacagawea's nickname was Janey—and for linking this to Lonesome Dove, a connection I hadn't thought about before but makes perfect sense for the role she plays in the novel, especially with the bumbling Roscoe.
